3. Installation of the SOBA Framework and Starting the Common Application

The SOBA Framework provided by the SOBA Project can be installed using the installer. The installation process is described step by step in this chapter.

In addition, this chapter describes how to start the common application that is automatically installed when you install the SOBA Framework. This common application is a P2P application that was developed as a sample based on the SOBA Framework. It provides you with functions to enjoy communication going beyond sharing texts with others to include sharing audio, video, and other contents.

3.1. Installation Procedures using the Installer

3.1.1. Starting up the Installer

To use the SOBA Framework provided by the SOBA Project, obtain the installer from the Web site shown in Chapter 2. Then, install the SOBA Framework using the installer.

When installing the SOBA Framework, double click the installer to display the window shown in Fig.3-1. To continue the installation process, click the "Next" button.

If you want to cancel the installation process, click the "Cancel" button. If you cancel the installation process, the installer terminates without installing anything. This "Cancel" operation can be applied throughout the installation process with the installer at any time by clicking the "Cancel" button.

3.1.2. License Agreement

Next, you will see the "License Agreement" window shown in Fig.3-2. Please read this license agreement carefully. You can only continue the installation process if you agree to all the terms and conditions of this license agreement. If you agree to all the terms and conditions of this license agreement, select "I agree to all the terms and conditions of this license agreement" and click the "Next" button.

3.1.3. Selecting the Installation Folder

Next, you will see the "Select the Installation Folder" window shown in Fig. 3-3. Select the folder where you would like to install the SOBA Framework. By default, the SOBA Framework is installed in the
"c:\Program Files\SOBA Project\SOBA Framework 1.2"
folder.

If you don't need to change the installation folder, simply use this default setting. If you need to change the installation folder, click the "Change" button to display the "Select the Folder" dialog shown in Fig. 3-4, where you can specify any folder for the installation.

After selecting and confirming the installation folder, click the "Next" button to continue. You can go back to the previous window by clicking the "Back" button.

3.1.4. Selecting the Installation Components

Next, you can select the components to install. The "Select the Installation Components" window is displayed as shown in Fig. 3-5 by clicking the "Next" button on the above "Select the Installation Folder" window.

Use this window to select the components to install. The Java and Direct X environments are required to run the SOBA Framework. If your PC does not have the Java and Direct X environments installed, make sure all the necessary components to use the SOBA Framework are selected in the window shown in Fig. 3-5 and then click the "Next" button to continue.

If your PC already has the Java and Direct X environments installed, deselect the checkboxes for installing the unnecessary components. To run the current release of the SOBA Framework, Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02 or later and DirectX8.1 Runtime or later are required.

One method to check if your PC has the Direct X environment installed is to use the "dxdiag" command (extension: exe).Select "Execute after Filename designation" in the "Start" menu of Windows, type "dxdiag" in the dialog, and then click the "OK" button.The "Direct X Diagnosis tool" is activated. By selecting the "System" tab in the Direct X Diagnosis tool, you can check the version and other information on the Direct X in your PC.

3.1.5. Completing the Installation Setup

After selecting the components to install, you are now ready to install the programs. The "Program Installation Setup Complete" window is displayed as shown in Fig. 3-6.

Start the installation process by clicking the "Install" button.

If you click the "Install" button in this window, the installation of a set of files required to use the SOBA Framework starts. Click the "Install" button to start the installation process. Immediately after you click the "Install" button, the window shown in Fig. 3-7 is displayed. You can see the file transfer status with the progress bar in this window. If you want to change the components to install, go back to the previous window by clicking the "Back" button and change the contents to install.

3.1.6. Completing the Installation

When the installer completes the installation process, the "Installation Complete" window is displayed as shown in Fig. 3-8. Now, the installation to use the SOBA Framework is complete.

Please read the README file first.

Please read the README file before using the SOBA Framework. The README file includes the latest release information such as considerations and restrictions on using the SOBA Framework. If you want to skip the README file, deselect the checkbox for the "Show README file" item in the window. You can close the installer by clicking the "Complete" button.

Now, you will see the "Soba 1.2" icon to start the common application on your desktop. The common application can be started by double clicking the icon. Alternatively, you can start the common application from the "Start" menu. The installer adds the "SOBA" menu in the "Programs" that can be reached from the Windows "Start" menu. You can start "Soba 1.2", the common application, from the "SOBA"menu.
